The very beginning of LearnNova Kids
Early on, I thought my youngest son might be behind.
Like many moms, I watched milestones closely. I wondered if he was “supposed” to be doing certain things by certain ages. Then I watched the Bluey episode “Baby Race,” and even though it was a cartoon, it truly hit home.
Life is not a baby race.
Children do not all learn the same way. They do not all grow on the same timeline. Some kids show us who they are quietly. Some show us through movement. Some through words. Some through patterns, letters, numbers, planets, music, or lining up every single toy in perfect order.
For my son, it started with the solar system.
The Day Everything Changed
Around one and a half years old, my son developed an intense love for the planets.
One day, completely out of nowhere, he named the planets in order.
My oldest daughter and I looked at each other like, “Wait… is he right?”
We both grabbed our phones and immediately searched, “What’s the order of the planets?”
He was 100% correct.
I was stunned and in awe all at the same time.
That was the beginning of his fascination with numbers, order, letters, patterns, and perfectly lined-up toys. And let me tell you, the one thing you did not want to do was accidentally touch one of those toys after he had placed them in the perfect order.
Planets, Numbers, and a Mind That Never Stopped
By age two, he could name the planets and the dwarf planets forwards and backwards.
He would line them up in order. Then he would grab numbers and match each number to the correct planet. Every day, he amazed me.
His emotions toward people came later than his emotions toward his planets. If a planet got knocked out of order, you might hear his sweet little voice say, “I’m sorry, Pluto.”
I was completely in awe of his connection to the solar system.
By age three, his love for numbers and letters had taken over.
He could do multiplication up to 10. He understood some division. He was obsessed with calculators. He could tell you off the top of his head what:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10equals.
You would hear his excited little voice say, “55!”
Then he started saying his times tables in what felt like 30 seconds, all the way up to 10. Then came counting by hundreds, thousands, millions, and beyond.
Then one day he said, “I want to watch googols.”
It took me way longer than I would like to admit to realize he was talking about the number…..not Google the website.
Searching for Resources
I immediately started researching.
Kids obsessed with numbers.
Kids obsessed with patterns.
Early reading.
Letters.
Big numbers.
Planet learning.
Hyperlexia. Autism.
The more I searched, the more I learned about hyperlexia and how it is often connected with autistic learning styles. But the thing is, there are very few resources made specifically for kids like him.
So I started searching for ways to keep his curious mind entertained and growing.
I searched for planet apps.
I searched for big number apps.
I searched for large number apps for hyperlexic kids.
I searched for big number toys for autistic kids.
Again and again, I could not find what I was looking for.
We had number magnets, letter magnets, math magnets, big whiteboards, and Expo markers.
He loved them.
But he wanted more.
So I built it.
Building the App I Couldn’t Find
LearnNova Kids began as a way to harness everything my son already loved: planets, numbers, movement, memory, order, patterns, letters, and curiosity.
But I did not want to build an app where kids just sit and tap.
I wanted it to be interactive.
I wanted kids to move, jump, explore, and feel like they were inside the learning.
One of our first games lets us screen mirror the app to the TV so my son can see himself jumping. As he jumps, he sees the numbers he loves counting, and with every jump, a new planet appears, followed by comets, black holes, and more surprises.
Learning became movement.
Learning became play.
Learning became something he could feel.
The Planet Match Moment
We also created a memory match game with the planets.
I broke it into three levels. The third level included all of the planets and dwarf planets. My daughter and I thought it might be too challenging for kids.
Then my son tested it.
He solved it.
He actually memorized every single card and completed the hardest level.
Again, at only three years old.
That was another moment where I just sat there completely amazed by him.
Then Came Number Universe
As soon as we built the planet games and saw how much he loved them, I knew exactly what the next world needed to be.
Number Universe.
This world was built around his absolute love of numbers both big and small.
Now he can zoom in and out of numbers. He can explore place value. He can compare bigger and smaller numbers. He can walk around the house using the phone and jump to collect floating numbers in our living room.
And once again, he blew me away.
He was sorting numbers in the millions. He was recognizing bigger and smaller values. He was exploring place value and solving math problems because the app met him where his curiosity already lived.
Why Positivity Matters So Much
One of the biggest things I want LearnNova Kids to stand for is encouragement.
In other apps, every time my son got something wrong, his heart shattered. Seeing “wrong” or “oops” could lead to a real breakdown.
So I knew LearnNova Kids had to feel different.
In our app, incorrect answers are not treated like failure. They are treated like part of the adventure.
Instead of “No” or “Wrong,” we use phrases like:
Keep exploring!
Almost there!
Try again, space explorer!
You’re still learning!So far, we have not had a breakdown.
That matters to me more than I can even explain.
Built for Curious Kids
My mama heart is insanely full.
LearnNova Kids started because of one little boy’s beautiful, fascinating, curious mind. But my hope is that it grows into something that helps many different kinds of learners.
Whether a child is just beginning with shapes and colors, learning letters, exploring planets, counting numbers, playing with music, or already solving multiplication and division, the adventure is theirs to choose.
